136 - Getting Started with Inclusive Design

Inclusive design is becoming more critical as companies realize their potential markets are more diverse than ever. With 80 million Americans living with a disability, tech products designed and marketed for standardly-able tech users miss the majority of the tech market.

In addition to usability issues, much of tech marketing also presents unhelpful stereotypes of female and multicultural users in print and digital messaging.

While companies know not to default to limiting stereotypes, such as "pink tools for female customers," they often struggle with what inclusive design really means. Who, exactly, are we including? And how? And is design really enough, or do we need to be more inclusive in all product management functions, from R & D to marketing? (The answer is yes!)

In this workshop, we'll present a toolkit for inclusive product management:

1. How to design with the needs of diverse users in mind, including how to ensure diversity in customer discovery and user acceptance testing panels.

2. Ways in which common user experiences can accidentally exclude users.

3. How to create segmented B2C and B2B go-to-market plans that reach a diverse audience.

4. How to market products in ways that avoid stereotypes or create different messaging that divides rather than informs.
